Sa Buttega is dedicated to discovering and celebrating the elements that make rural life in Villasalto – and the Gerrei region as a whole – so distinctively authentic. This is done primarily through our Art Residency Program that has an ongoing open call for Artists from diverse disciplines, including visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, music & sound, culinary, media & digital arts, design & applied arts, architectural & spatial practices and craft & traditional arts to connect and explore the territory through meaningful interactions.
The weekly cost of the Art Residency is 600€*. Residencies have a minimum duration of 1 week to a maximum of 3 weeks.

Each residency includes a Welcome dinner and a Farewell meal, supplies for breakfast, and cooked dinners from Monday to Friday. The kitchen and pantry are well stocked with fresh and local produce during the time of the residency. Read about previous residencies.
During your time at Sa Buttega, we facilitate meaningful encounters with local makers and skilled practitioners. Workshops and meetings are organized with local artisans, specialists and makers spanning a wide range of disciplines, including carpentry, stonemasonry, blacksmithing, traditional building techniques, weaving, culinary, traditional music-making, and botanical knowledge of local herbs and medicinal plants.
The Space
Sa Buttega is built in a traditional architectural structure, typical of Southern Sardinia known the ‘Casa Campidanese’. Once the hub of family life, it is especially conducive to fostering a sense of community, as buildings are organized around an internal courtyard. Here, artists and guests are offered both opportunities for meaningful exchange and moments of quiet introspection – an essential balance for the creative process.
We offer a stay at one of our two Buttegas (Workshop spaces) or apartments.
La Falegnameria, is an old 200yr old stone carpentry of 37sq meters built on 2 floors – the top floor has a double bed and small desk whereas the ground floor is the Art Gallery/Art Studio. This space is perfect both for creatives in the visual field as well as literary ones.
Il Calzolaio, a former cobbler’s workshop, is a 18sq meter stone house apartment built on two floors, with a double bed on the second floor and a sofa bed that turns into a single bed on the first. It could sleep up to 3 people. This space is perfect for couples or small groups of 3.
The kitchen, shower and toilet and laundry facility are shared spaces.
We also encourage participation in village life through the involvement in local festivals, which are deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions tied to the seasons and surrounding nature. In addition, visiting artists are invited to share their own artistic practices and techniques with the local community, especially through labs and workshops for the children of Villasalto.
