About

Sa Buttega is a cultural hub committed to celebrating the beauty of rural life in Villasalto, Southern Sardinia, while encouraging its innovation through meaningful cultural and artistic exchanges. It is the first exhibition space in Southern Sardinia dedicated to contemporary art.

Sa Buttega is located in the historic center of Villasalto, an authentic rural village home to 800 inhabitants perched atop a plateau at an altitude of 505 meters in the heart of the Gerrei region, just 60 km from Cagliari and 20km from the South-Eastern coast and beaches.

Our hybrid space brings together a Bed & Breakfast, a Home Restaurant, and anArt Gallery + Studio in historic stone buildings comprised of four 200-yr old stone buildings – former Buttegas or Workshops, including an old carpentry and a cobbler’s workshop, all configured around what is now a a Japanese Zen Garden at its heart.

This traditional architectural structure, typical of Southern Sardinia known the ‘Casa Campidanese’, once the hub of family life, is especially conducive to fostering a sense of community, as buildings are organized around an internal courtyard. Here, artists and guests are offered both opportunities for meaningful exchange and moments of quiet introspection – an essential balance for the creative process. Sa Buttega collaborates with artists, curators and cultural organizations locally and internationally to foster a dialogue among diverse creative voices. In 2025, the gallery began a residency program to bring art and creative exchanges to the local community.

Mission

Sa Buttega is dedicated to discovering and celebrating the elements that make rural life in Villasalto – and the Gerrei region as a whole – so distinctively authentic. This is done through meaningful interactions, ranging from Art Residencies to workshops with local makers to immersive nature experiences in the lush surrounding landscapes as well as participation in local festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Sa Buttega is at the intersection of local traditions and the unique interpretation of visiting artists – sparking innovation and new creative processes. This exchange is what we strive for.

Vision

We envision a stay at Sa Buttega as the beginning of a meaningful journey of self-discovery, shaped by interactions, exchanges, and conversations with local residents; by an immersion in the town’s rich architectural heritage; and by a deep connection with the surrounding elements—wind, sun, rivers, and the lush forests that surround Villasalto.

Founders

Sa Buttega was founded in 2025 by Paul Frank Wagner – world renowned Contemporary Artist specialized in Land Art – and Angelica Manca – an award-winning author of nature-based children programs.
